Hi! My name is John and I have a passion for dog behavior, dog training, and helping people understand and more effectively communicate with their canine companions. I am a Karen Pryor Academy Certified Training Partner (KPA-CTP), and a Certified Family Dog Mediator (FDM). I completed Michael Shikashio's Aggression in Dogs Master Course, and have a BS in Animal Science from Rutgers University. I have previously worked as a Veterinary Technician for several animal hospitals, was a Research Scientist in the pharmaceutical industry, and a Software Engineer for a medical diagnostics company.
My dog Luna led me on the journey to becoming a dog trainer. She was reactive from the day that I adopted her. I was determined to understand the issue and help her. I read many books, took classes, and attended seminars and workshops dealing with aggression and reactivity. I experimented with many different training methods but ultimately what I have found to be the most effective method is positive reinforcement (R+) and creating positive associations with her environment. Training in this manner creates a sense of security for your dog and strengthens your bond with them.
As a force-free trainer, I do not use pain, fear, or intimidation to motivate a dog to perform or stop a behavior. I always use kindness compassion and empathy with all the animals I work with no matter how simple or severe the behavior issue may be.
